Training Last Updated: Jul 22, 2008 - 9:11:27 AM

AYSO is widely recognized as having one of the best volunteer training programs in the world. We have to: there are over 250,000 active volunteers in AYSO, throughout the world.

We offer training to coaches (this includes assistant coaches), referees, and team managers (aka "team moms", but quite a few guys are managers too!).

All AYSO training is free.

Please check our calendar link for upcoming training events. A brief description of the different curricula are described below. For further information or to request who to speak with about training, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator (882-AYSO or email to volunteer @ aysocarsoncity.org.

Referee Training

Referee training consists of three "tracks". The information you gain in each track carries upwards to other, parallel, tracks, so no training is ever wasted.

The most common question we hear about officiating is: "But I don't know the game". We will TEACH YOU THE GAME.

The most common objection to officiating is: "I don't have the time" The training does take time. Yet, most people who go through training find they enjoy the course. Once they gain confidence on the field, they actually like officiating. So, invest a little time in the training for your own good, as well as helping the players!

Check our Calendar link for upcoming training or contact the Regional Referee Administrator for training opportunities (882-AYSO voice mailbox 5, email referee @ aysocarsoncity.org).

Team Referees or U-8 Referees officiate our under -8 and under-6 year old matches. On the field, you are a teacher, a safety coordinator, and the cheerleader in chief. Training takes about 4 hours. Volunteers are provided with an appropriate shirt, whistle, and other materials.

Assistant Referees are trained to make the offside call, to determine when the ball is in and out of play, to determine if a goal has been scored, and to assist the center referee. Assistant referees are important in U-10 and older levels of play. Training takes about 2 hours. Volunteers are provided with appropriate materials and use the league flags.

Regional Referees are trained to work as the primary officials in U-10, U-12, and U-14 games. Training as a regional referee includes all of the training that U-8 and Assistant Referees receive. Thus, we encourage taking this training above all others. Training takes about 8 hours. Volunteers are provided with a uniform, equipment, and other materials.

Team Manager Training
The Team Manager (also known as "team mom") is an important part of the AYSO experience for the players. The Team Manager is the coach's right hand. The Team Manager is the person who makes certain that schedules are distributed, that families know how to help the team, that snacks appear when needed, that the team meets its volunteer duties, and that everyone comes to the fields to have fun. We provide a team manager orientation and training, usually about 2 weeks before the start of the season. The training is about 2 hours long, and includes handouts, ideas, and guidance.
