Referees

Referee Information

Supporting fair, fun, and safe play across AYSO Region 140.

Referees are just as important as players and coaches. In AYSO, games cannot be played without volunteer referees, and our program depends on community support to keep games running each week.

All AYSO referees are volunteers, and training is provided. You do not need prior soccer experience to get started. AYSO’s referee training is widely recognized and includes both online courses and in-person sessions within the community.

The training will walk you through everything you need—from basic rules to managing a game—so you can feel confident on the field.

10U BUILD-OUT LINE EXPLAINED (2019 VERSION)

Build-Out Line (10U)

Helping players develop confidence, spacing, and decision-making from the back.

The build-out line is part of the U.S. Soccer Player Development Initiative and is used in 10U matches. It introduces specific rules related to offside and goalkeeper distribution to encourage more controlled play and skill development.

First adopted by AYSO in the 2017–2018 season, the build-out line continues to evolve with small adjustments each year.

The goal is simple: give players more time and space to build from the back, reduce pressure on goalkeepers, and help young players learn positioning, passing, and decision-making.

Why It Matters

Instead of encouraging long kicks and chaos, the build-out line promotes possession, teamwork, and understanding of the game. It aligns with modern player development by focusing on learning first.

Coach & Ref Cheat Sheet

  • Goalkeeper has the ball: Opposing team must move behind the build-out line.
  • Ball is put back into play: Opponents can cross the build-out line once the ball is touched or released.
  • No punting or drop kicks: Goalkeepers should roll or pass the ball to restart play.
  • Offside starts at the build-out line: Not midfield—this is a big one players (and parents) miss.
  • Give players time: This is about learning, not rushing the restart.

Common mistakes: Pressing too early, forgetting the offside line change, and treating restarts like older divisions. When in doubt, slow it down and let the kids build out properly.
